This page lists 10 verified Oregon book publishers, and 7 of them are open to submissions right now. You will find a university press, a student-run literary press, a gardening and natural history publisher, DIY and travel nonfiction houses and two of the best known names in comics. Most of the open presses here accept work from unagented authors. Each listing is checked against the publisher's own site, but policies change, so confirm the current guidelines on the publisher's website before you send anything.
How to choose among Oregon book publishers
Start with your genre, because the presses here are specialists. OSU Press focuses on nonfiction such as history, memoir and academic work. Timber Press wants gardening, horticulture and natural history proposals from experts. Microcosm Publishing publishes DIY nonfiction, while Overcup Press takes nonfiction queries that include travel. If you write fiction, Ooligan Press is the main open option for literary and young adult novels. Comics creators can look at Image Comics and Dark Horse Comics. Read a few recent titles from any press before you query so you know your book fits its list.
Who is open and who is closed
Most open publishers on this page accept work from unagented authors, so you do not need an agent to get started. Some well known names are closed right now. Hawthorne Books is not accepting unsolicited manuscripts, and Oni Press has no open submission method or reopening date. Harvest House publishes Christian fiction, nonfiction and children’s books but is also listed as closed. Do not send work to a closed press. Watch its website for a change in policy instead, and check the live status in the directory above.
What to send
Every press asks for something different, so follow each one exactly. OSU Press wants a prospectus with an annotated table of contents and sample chapters. Ooligan wants a query letter, the first 10 pages and a summary through Submittable, and it does not accept emailed submissions. Timber Press takes proposals only by email. Microcosm wants a pitch with comparable titles and an outline, not a manuscript. Image Comics asks for finished, lettered sample pages and a cover mock-up, and Dark Horse requires a signed Submission Agreement. Sending the wrong format is one of the fastest ways to get passed over.
Finding publishing companies in Oregon
When you search for publishing companies in Oregon or book publishers in Oregon, you often get old lists that mix active presses with ones that stopped taking submissions years ago. This directory shows current status instead. Each listing is checked against the publisher’s own site, and the open count updates as policies change. Use it as a starting point, then confirm the guidelines on the publisher’s website before you send, since a press can close or change its requirements at any time.

Questions authors ask
Answers use the live data on this page.
Do Oregon book publishers accept unagented submissions?
Yes, most of the open presses on this page do. OSU Press, Ooligan Press, Timber Press, Microcosm Publishing, Overcup Press, Image Comics and Dark Horse Comics all accept work without an agent. Each has its own rules about format and genre, so read the full guidelines on the publisher's site before you send anything to make sure your book fits.
Which Oregon publishers take fiction?
Ooligan Press is the main open option for prose fiction, taking literary fiction and young adult fiction from unagented writers through Submittable. Image Comics and Dark Horse Comics take fiction in comics form. OSU Press does not take unsolicited fiction, and Hawthorne Books, which publishes literary fiction, is closed. Confirm current status before you query any of them.
Should I send work to a closed publisher?
No, wait until the press reopens. Hawthorne Books, Oni Press and Harvest House are listed as closed, and unsolicited work sent to a closed press is unlikely to be read. Hawthorne notes that no reply should be treated as a no. Watch each publisher's website for a change in policy and check this directory for its live status.
Do I have to pay to submit to these presses?
None of the open presses on this page list a submission fee. Overcup Press states there are no fees, and Image Comics notes that you pay nothing up front. Still, read each publisher's guidelines on its own site before you send, and be cautious of any press that asks you to pay to be published.
