What Is BookBub, and Is It Worth It for Authors?

By AuthorWings editorial team 10 min read

Short answer

BookBub is a free service that sends readers a daily email of limited-time ebook deals chosen by its editors; it claims over 15 million people have signed up. Authors can pay for a Featured Deal, run ads, or claim a free profile that alerts followers to new books. Featured Deals are selective: BookBub picks only a minority of submissions.

BookBub often comes up when authors talk about book promotion, usually as the big deals email that’s hard to get into. This guide explains how it works for readers, the main tools it offers authors, what a Featured Deal costs and requires, and how to work out whether one is worth it for your book. The readiness check below tells you if your book can be submitted yet. If you’d rather have help, our book marketing services include a Featured Deal application in the 8-week launch plan.

How BookBub works for readers

Readers join BookBub for free and choose the genres they like. Each day, BookBub emails them a short list of ebook deals in those genres, and the same deals appear on its website and app. Many deals are free; others are discounted, some by up to 95%.

BookBub doesn’t sell books itself. Each deal links to the stores where the book is on sale, such as Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Google Play and Kobo. Its editors choose which books appear, so authors compete for a place.

BookBub for authors: the main tools at a glance

BookBub has several tools for authors, and only some of them are selective. These are the main ones (as of October 2026).

A Featured Deal is the tool authors usually mean when they talk about BookBub. Your ebook appears in the daily email to readers who chose its genre, with a short description.

The requirements (as of October 2026):

  • A real discount: the ebook must be free or at least 50% off its current price.
  • The best price: no lower price in the last 30 days, and none planned soon after.
  • A full-length book: at least 150 pages for novels and story collections, 100 for non-fiction and middle grade, 70 for cookbooks and 20 for picture books. Standalone novellas and short stories aren’t featured.
  • Time between deals: at least six months since this book’s last Featured Deal, and at least 30 days since your last Featured Deal for any book. If a submission isn’t chosen, you can submit again after four weeks.
  • A limited-time deal on a major store: the deal runs for a limited time (permanently free books also qualify) on at least one of Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Google Play or Kobo, in the US, UK, Canada or Australia.
  • Clean text: error-free and well formatted.

The odds: BookBub’s guide to its selection process says about 25% of submissions are chosen, and its support pages say 10 to 20% of eligible deals. Its editors look at reader reviews, critical praise and awards, the cover and whether it fits the genre, how well the book fits what readers in that category want right now, and the other books submitted for the same week.

The cost: submitting is free; you pay a flat fee only if your book is chosen. The fee depends on the genre, the deal price and the regions you pick, and BookBub updates it. As examples from its price list in October 2026 (all regions), a free deal costs $122 for children’s books and $762 for thrillers, while a $0.99 deal costs $152 and $948 respectively. Check BookBub’s current pricing page before you plan.

BookBub Ads

BookBub Ads are a separate, self-serve tool. Any author can run them, with no editorial review, and they can promote a book at full price, not just a deal. You choose who sees the ad, for example readers of a similar author, set a budget, and bid either per thousand views or per click. Ads run as an auction: the highest bid for a reader wins and pays the second-highest bid, and you never pay more than your maximum bid or your budget.

Ads take testing: images, wording and targets all change results. Ad spend comes from your budget, and results aren’t guaranteed.

Your author profile and new release alerts

Your free author profile lets BookBub readers follow you. To claim it, you need an ebook on sale in the US at a major store (Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Google Play or Kobo), and BookBub checks that it’s you.

When you release a new ebook, BookBub emails your followers for free, once you have at least 5, if you add the book before, on, or up to 7 days after its release date; re-releases and new box sets of books already published don’t count. BookBub sends these alerts to US readers only. You can also recommend books you love on your profile, which gives readers a reason to follow you. Followers are part of your author platform, even though BookBub controls the email.

Is BookBub worth it?

A Featured Deal reaches a large, genre-matched list of deal readers in one day. Whether it pays for itself depends on the fee, your royalty at the deal price, and whether readers go on to buy your other books.

The break-even maths for a paid deal. On Amazon, an ebook priced at $0.99 earns a 35% royalty under KDP’s 35% royalty option, about $0.35 a copy. (A KDP Select Countdown Deal on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk keeps your 70% rate, and ebook files of 3 MB or more can’t be priced below $1.99 on the 35% option.) At October 2026 fees, that means:

ExampleFee for a $0.99 dealRoyalty per Amazon copyCopies to cover the fee
Dark romance$276about $0.35about 797
Thriller$948about $0.35about 2,736

Sales in other stores, read-through to your other books and new newsletter signups all count too, but they’re harder to measure.

Free deals earn nothing on the day. They’re worth it when the book is the first in a series or leads readers to your newsletter, so later sales cover the fee.

BookBub tends to suit:

  • Authors with a series or a backlist, where a discounted first book can lead to sales of the rest.
  • Books with reviews and a strong genre cover, which also improve your odds of being chosen.

It’s usually better to wait if you have one book, no reviews yet, or a cover that doesn’t fit the genre. In that case, build reviews first, and consider smaller book promotion sites; see how to get book reviews.

  1. Pick your deal dates and price. Choose a free deal or a price at least 50% off, and check it’s your lowest in 30 days. If your ebook is in KDP Select, it’s only on Amazon, so the deal reaches only readers who buy there.
  2. Create a BookBub Partners account (and claim your author profile if you haven’t).
  3. Submit the book with your preferred dates, price, regions and stores. Add any accolades, review quotes or sales milestones the editors should know.
  4. Wait for the decision. If you’re chosen, BookBub confirms the date and the fee. Set the price on every store you listed before the deal day.
  5. If you’re not chosen, improve what you can (reviews, cover, price) and submit again after four weeks.

When to get help

If you’d rather not handle it yourself, our 8-week launch plan ($749) includes an application for a BookBub Featured Deal, alongside early copies, pre-orders, newsletter swaps and 4 strategy calls. BookBub decides which books it features, and its deal fee is paid by you if your book is chosen. We also set up BookBub Ads accounts in your name for $299 per platform, and manage them for $499 a month per platform, with a 3-month minimum; ad spend is paid by you directly. We never promise sales, rankings or selection.

BookBub questions

Is BookBub free for readers?

Yes. Readers sign up for free, choose their genres and get a daily email of deals. Authors and publishers pay BookBub for Featured Deals, other promotions and ads.

Can self-published authors get a Featured Deal?

Yes. Self-published and traditionally published books go through the same editorial selection, against the same requirements: a deal price at least 50% off, your lowest in 30 days, a full-length book, and clean, well-formatted text.

Can you get a Featured Deal for a new release?

Featured Deals need a deal against an existing price, so they suit books that are already out. For a new release, BookBub’s New Releases For Less feature covers new ebooks priced around $6 or less, submitted up to 6 months before release. Your free author profile also sends a new release alert to your US followers.

What happens if BookBub rejects your book?

Nothing is charged, and you can submit again after four weeks. A rejection can come down to the other books submitted that week, so it’s worth trying again with a stronger offer: more reviews, a lower price, or a cover that better fits the genre.

Does a Featured Deal work for print books or audiobooks?

No. Featured Deals are for ebooks. BookBub runs a separate audiobook service, and print books aren’t featured in the deals email.
