What do Open, Closed and Agent needed mean?
  • Open now: the publisher's own site says it is reading submissions today, in at least one genre listed.
  • Closed: not reading new submissions right now. We show the reopening date when the publisher gives one.
  • Agent needed: it only reads manuscripts sent by a literary agent.

Submit with confidence

Four checks before you send anything to a publisher, whichever list you use.

Check it on their own site

Guidelines change. Read the publisher's own submissions page on the day you send.

Never pay to be published

A traditional publisher pays you. If a company asks for money, it is a paid service.

Send exactly what they ask

Query, proposal or sample chapters: follow the format and word count to the letter.

Track every submission

Note the date, the reply time and whether no reply means no before you follow up.

Canadian publishers are some of the most open in the world to authors without an agent, though many give priority to Canadian writers. We list 12 Canadian book publishers, and 10 of them are open to submissions today. Every listing was checked on the publisher's own site and shows whether you need an agent, any citizenship rule, what to send and how long a reply takes. Use the filters to find book publishers in Canada reading now. Each profile also shows the date we last checked the publisher's own page, so you can see how current the rules are.

Book publishers in Canada that read unagented work

Most book publishers in Canada on this page read submissions sent directly by authors. House of Anansi, Dundurn and ECW Press read fiction and nonfiction, Arsenal Pulp Press reads literary and LGBTQ books by post and Coach House reads innovative poetry and fiction. For children’s books, Annick Press and Second Story Press read work directly.

Citizenship rules at Canadian publishers

Many Canadian publishing companies give priority to Canadian writers, often because of grant rules. ECW accepts fiction and poetry from Canadians only but nonfiction from anyone. Second Story Press takes only citizens or permanent residents living in Canada. Anansi, Dundurn and Coach House prioritize Canadians without barring others, and Arsenal Pulp sets no citizenship rule at all.

Who are the Big 5 publishers in Canada?

The Big Five groups are Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Hachette and Macmillan, and most have Canadian operations. This page focuses on Canadian publishers we have verified, which are mostly independent. Our Big Five profiles, such as Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster, show they read mainly agented work.

Canadian book publishers by region

Toronto is home to many houses on this page, including House of Anansi, ECW, Dundurn, Coach House, Annick and Second Story. Arsenal Pulp Press publishes from Vancouver, Goose Lane Editions from Fredericton and Hancock House from British Columbia. Read each profile for local focus and rules.

How we check these listings

Every publisher on this page was checked on its own website, and we review each listing every month. We list only traditional publishers, which pay authors and do not charge them to publish. If a house adds fees, packages or a paid route, we say so on its profile or leave it out of the directory.

Book publishers Canada writers should know

When you compare book publishers Canada has to offer, look at grant rules, regional focus and reply times as well as genre. Second Story takes 7 to 10 months to reply, ECW treats four months of silence as a no and House of Anansi takes 4 to 6 months. Plan your submissions around those timelines.
