Four checks before you send anything to a publisher, whichever list you use.
Check it on their own site
Guidelines change. Read the publisher's own submissions page on the day you send.
Never pay to be published
A traditional publisher pays you. If a company asks for money, it is a paid service.
Send exactly what they ask

Track every submission
Note the date, the reply time and whether no reply means no before you follow up.
Academic publishers in the UK range from university presses to independent radical and professional houses, and almost all read proposals directly from authors. We list 12 UK academic publishers, and 12 of them are open to proposals today. Every listing was checked on the publisher's own site and shows what to send, how proposals are reviewed and any open access fees. Use the filters to find the right subject fit. Each profile also shows the date we last checked the publisher's own page, so you can see how current the rules are.
Academic publishers UK authors can approach directly
Academic publishers in the UK rarely need agents. Routledge commissions by subject editor, Edinburgh University Press sends proposals to anonymous peer reviewers and Bristol University Press welcomes first-time authors. Pluto Press and Hurst read radical and political scholarship, and Oneworld reads academic proposals among its general nonfiction.
Educational publishers UK teachers write for
Educational publishers in the UK on this page include Crown House, which publishes education, coaching and therapy titles from teachers and trainers, and Jessica Kingsley Publishers, which publishes for professionals and families. Both read pitches without an agent.
Open access fees
Several UK academic presses offer open access as an option with a fee. Bristol University Press quotes £9,000 to £11,000 plus VAT for a standard monograph, and Edinburgh University Press £8,000 plus VAT. Both offer a free route for standard publication. Any press that requires a fee for a normal print book is a paid service, not a traditional publisher.
What to send
Expect to send a proposal with an overview, a chapter plan, your CV and sample chapters to the editor for your subject. Edinburgh asks for sole consideration while it reviews, so check each profile before sending the same proposal elsewhere.
How we check these listings
Every publisher on this page was checked on its own website, and we review each listing every month. We list only traditional publishers, which pay authors and do not charge them to publish. If a house adds fees, packages or a paid route, we say so on its profile or leave it out of the directory.
University presses and independent academic houses
UK academic publishing includes university presses, such as Cambridge, Edinburgh and Bristol, and independent houses, such as Pluto, Hurst and Intellect. University presses usually send proposals for peer review, while independents may decide faster. Neither type charges authors for standard publication.

Questions authors ask
Answers use the live data on this page.
Do UK academic publishers accept proposals without an agent?
Yes. Almost every academic publisher in the UK on this page reads proposals sent directly by authors, usually to the editor for the subject. Routledge, Edinburgh University Press, Bristol University Press, Pluto Press, Hurst and Jessica Kingsley Publishers all describe a direct route.
Do UK academic publishers charge authors?
Not for standard publication. Open access is optional and carries a fee at several presses, such as £8,000 plus VAT at Edinburgh University Press. Each offers a free route for a standard book. A press that requires payment for an ordinary print edition is a paid service.
Can I send my proposal to several UK academic presses?
Check each press first. Edinburgh University Press asks for sole consideration while it reviews a proposal, so wait for its decision before trying elsewhere. Other presses may accept simultaneous submissions. Each profile on this page states the rule where the publisher gives one.
