- Read its guidelines on the day you send. Some UK presses open and close submissions often.
- Send exactly what it asks for: often a cover letter, synopsis and first three chapters, or a nonfiction proposal.
- Note the reply time. Many UK publishers say no reply within one to three months means no.
For querying agents, see our guide to how to get a book published.
Paid services are not listed
A traditional UK publisher pays you and covers the costs of publishing. Companies that charge authors are paid services, so we leave them out. Where a traditional publisher also runs a separate paid service, its profile says so clearly. See our guide to vanity presses for the warning signs.
