- Closed: not reading new submissions right now. We show the reopening date when the publisher gives one.
- Agent needed: it only reads manuscripts sent by a literary agent.
Submit with confidence
Four checks before you send anything to a publisher, whichever list you use.
Check it on their own site
Guidelines change. Read the publisher's own submissions page on the day you send.
Never pay to be published
A traditional publisher pays you. If a company asks for money, it is a paid service.
Send exactly what they ask
Query, proposal or sample chapters: follow the format and word count to the letter.
Track every submission
Note the date, the reply time and whether no reply means no before you follow up.
Nonfiction is the easiest area to approach without an agent, because many houses buy books on a proposal. We list 264 nonfiction publishers, and 191 are open to submissions today. Each listing was checked on the publisher's own site and shows what to send, whether you need an agent and how long a reply takes. Filter by genre, country or status to find houses that publish books like yours and are reading now, then follow each one's own guidelines exactly and in full.
Why nonfiction is easier to pitch
Many nonfiction publishers buy a book on a proposal, not a finished manuscript. That means you can test an idea with an outline and a sample chapter before you write the whole book. It also means your expertise and your reach matter: editors want to know why you are the right person to write it and how readers will find it.
Sports book publishers
Sports book publishers on this page include Human Kinetics, which publishes on sport, fitness and health, and McFarland, whose list covers sports alongside film and military history. Birlinn also takes sport proposals from authors without an agent. Each wants something different, so compare their profiles before you choose.
History, current affairs and specialist nonfiction
For serious history and politics, Hurst Publishers and Sutherland House read proposals directly. Hancock House focuses on western and northern history and natural history. Several say exactly how long you should wait for a reply.
Self-help, faith and lifestyle
Hay House reads self-help, spirituality and health ideas through an online form. Many Christian houses on this page also publish nonfiction; see our Christian book publishers list for the full set. For illustrated cookbooks and travel, New Holland Publishers takes submissions by email.
What to put in a nonfiction proposal
Most houses on this page ask for the same core pieces: a short summary, a detailed table of contents, the audience, competing titles, your credentials and one or two sample chapters. Some add their own form or questionnaire. Write the proposal for the specific house, and follow its instructions on format and length.
How we check these listings
Every publisher on this page was checked on its own website, and we review each listing every month. We list only traditional publishers, which pay authors and do not charge them to publish. If a house adds fees, packages or a paid route, we say so on its profile or leave it out of the directory.

Questions authors ask
Answers use the live data on this page.
Do nonfiction publishers need a finished manuscript?
Usually not. Most nonfiction publishers on this page ask for a proposal: a summary, a table of contents, your credentials, competing titles and one or two sample chapters. Some, like Human Kinetics, want a short inquiry first. A few, like New Holland Publishers, prefer the full manuscript, so check each profile.
Which nonfiction publishers accept unagented proposals?
Many do. McFarland, Hurst, Sutherland House, Human Kinetics, Hay House, Casemate and Hancock House all read nonfiction directly from authors. Several Christian houses on this page do too. The large trade houses, such as Penguin Random House and Macmillan, read only agented work.
Are there sports book publishers that take proposals?
Yes. Human Kinetics publishes sport, fitness and health books and starts with a short inquiry. McFarland publishes on sports among other subjects and reads proposals by email. Birlinn takes sport proposals from authors without an agent. Each profile shows what to send and how long a reply takes.

How we verify listings. We list traditional publishers only: no hybrid, vanity or paid self-publishing companies. Every listing is checked on the publisher's own website and rechecked every month. This page was last updated 26 Oct 2026; next review November 2026. Spotted a change? Tell us.
