How Long Is a Memoir? Word Count and Pages, by Type

By AuthorWings editorial team 7 min read

Short answer

A published memoir usually runs about 65,000 to 90,000 words, according to a former senior editor at a major publisher; literary agents writing in 2026 give 70,000 to 90,000. That’s roughly 220 to 360 pages in a 6 x 9 paperback. A memoir printed for family is often much shorter, and a memoir essay runs from under 1,000 to about 6,000 words.

Memoir length depends on what you’re writing and who it’s for. A book you hope to sell to a publisher has a fairly clear range; a book for your grandchildren has none. This guide gives the ranges by type, how many pages your word count makes, how long some real memoirs are, and what your length means for time and cost. For the writing itself, see how to write a memoir.

Above about 100,000 words, a memoir needs an extraordinary hook or author platform, according to a 2026 guide from literary agents. For short pieces, see a short memoir or memoir essay. For a whole-life book for your family, see a book about your whole life.

How many pages is a memoir?

Page count depends on the trim size (the page size), the type size and how much dialogue the book has. To check, we set the same 30,000 words of prose from three public-domain memoirs in two common paperback sizes, with chapter breaks, and counted the pages.

Words per page measured in two paperback sizes
Trim size12 pt type, roomy spacing11.5 pt type, tighter spacing
6 x 9 inchesAbout 290 to 310 words per pageAbout 340 to 355 words per page
5.5 x 8.5 inchesAbout 245 to 260 words per pageAbout 280 to 295 words per page

Those books have long paragraphs and little dialogue. A modern memoir with dialogue and short paragraphs fits fewer words on a page, and a former publishing editor uses about 250 words a page as a rule of thumb. For a typical memoir in a 6 x 9 paperback, plan on about 250 to 300 words a page, the figure used in the page estimates above. A 75,000-word memoir then comes to roughly 250 to 300 pages.

How long real memoirs are

We counted the words in seven well-known memoirs and autobiographies from Project Gutenberg, from the first chapter to the last, leaving out contents pages, editors’ notes and appendices.

Older books range widely, from about 35,000 to over 150,000 words. Today’s publishers work to a narrower range, which is why the figures in the first table matter more than these if you plan to sell your book.

What decides your memoir’s length

Three things set the length more than anything else:

  • How much time it covers. One year needs fewer words than twenty. A memoir chooses one part of a life, so it’s usually shorter than a whole-life autobiography.
  • Who it’s for. A publisher expects the trade range. A family book can be as short as the story needs, and a shorter book is easier to finish.
  • How you’ll publish. A traditional publisher sets expectations through agents and editors. If you self-publish, you choose the length, though very long books cost more to print.

What your length means for time, chapters and cost

  • Time: at 500 words a session, five sessions a week, a 75,000-word first draft takes about 30 weeks. Use our book writing timeline calculator for your own pace.
  • Chapters: divide your target by your number of chapters for a per-chapter goal. Our guide to chapter length by genre has a planner.
  • Cost: editing and ghostwriting are usually priced by length. Our memoir ghostwriting packages show the price at 20,000, 50,000 and 90,000 words.

Is your memoir too long or too short?

Signs your draft is too long, and what to do:

  • Chapters that repeat a point. Keep the strongest scene and cut the rest.
  • Long stretches of background. Move only what the reader needs into the scenes where they need it.
  • Two stories in one book. If a second thread pulls away from your main question, it may be a second book.

Signs your draft is too short:

  • Summary where scenes should be. Turn key moments into full scenes, with place, action and dialogue.
  • No reflection. Add what you understand now about what happened then.
  • A missing middle. Short drafts often jump from the setup to the ending; fill in the turns between.

When to get help

If your draft is far over or under your target, a second reader can see what to cut or build:

  • Write and revise it yourself, with a deadline. A book coach reads your latest pages every two weeks and helps you shape the draft. We have a coach who works with memoir. Book coaching is from $849, or $399 for a single session.
  • Have it written to the length you want. A memoir ghostwriter interviews you and writes the book at an agreed length. Memoir ghostwriting is 68¢ a word, from $13,600 for 20,000 words, and every word is by a human writer.

Questions about memoir length

What is the minimum length for a memoir?

There’s no fixed minimum. For a traditionally published book, one agent wrote in 2016 that his agency rarely saw memoirs under 50,000 words, and one agent at a Christian literary agency suggests 40,000 to 70,000. A memoir you publish yourself or print for family can be any length the story needs, and a short memoir essay can be under 1,000 words.

Is 50,000 words enough for a memoir?

It can be. It’s within the range one agent at a Christian literary agency gives for memoir (40,000 to 70,000 words), and it’s a full-length book if you self-publish. For a general trade publisher, it’s on the short side; agents more often ask for 70,000 to 90,000 words, so check the guidelines of the agents you plan to approach.

Does a memoir need to be as long as a novel?

Often, roughly. Memoir ranges are close to those for adult novels, around 70,000 to 100,000 words for most adult genres. The difference is that a memoir’s length should come from the story you’re telling, not from a target. A tight 65,000-word memoir is better than a padded 90,000-word one.

Do photos count toward a memoir’s length?

Photos don’t count toward the word count that agents and publishers ask for, but they add pages to the printed book. If you include many photos, expect a higher page count and a higher printing cost, especially in color. Plan where each photo goes so it supports the story rather than interrupting it.
