Short answer
A board book is a book for babies and toddlers, from birth to about age 3, printed on thick, stiff paperboard instead of paper. The pages are wipeable and have rounded corners, so small hands can grab, turn and chew them. Most board books have 12 to 24 printed pages and 100 to 200 words.
Board books are often a baby’s first books, and they look simple. But the format has its own rules for size, materials, safety and printing, and those rules affect anyone who wants to make one. This guide covers what sets a board book apart, from the thickness of each page to why Amazon can’t print one. If you’re planning a book for young children, our children’s book publishing services cover every format, board books included.

Who board books are for
Board books are made for children who handle books before they can read them. Babies grab, shake and chew. Toddlers turn pages roughly and often several at once. Thin paper tears under that treatment; thick board survives it.
The thick pages also help small fingers. A toddler can lift a board page on their own long before they can turn a paper one, so the child takes part in the reading. That’s part of why board book text is so short: each page holds one picture and one line for the adult to read aloud.
Board book vs picture book
| Board book | Picture book | |
|---|---|---|
| Ages | Birth to about 3 | About 3 to 7 |
| Words | 100 to 200 | 400 to 800 |
| Pages | 12 to 24 printed pages | Usually 32 |
| Page material | Thick paperboard | Paper |
| Story | One simple idea, often no plot | A full story with a beginning, middle and end |
| Printing | Offset print run only | Print on demand or offset |
Many well-known picture books later come out as board book editions, usually shortened to fit fewer pages and simpler text. Goodnight Moon and The Very Hungry Caterpillar are two examples you’ll find in both formats.
Pages vs leaves: how board books are counted
Board book page counts confuse many first-time authors, because sources count them two ways.
- A leaf is one thick board.
- Each leaf has two printed pages, one on the front and one on the back.
- 1 board leaf2 printed pages
- 8 board leaves16 printed pages
- Most baby board books8 to 12 leaves
- Printers usually offer6 to 20 leaves
So a book with 8 board leaves has 16 printed pages. Printers usually offer 6 to 20 leaves (12 to 40 printed pages), and most baby board books run 8 to 12 leaves (16 to 24 printed pages). The count is always even, and the first and last printed pages sit on the inside of the covers.
When you plan the book, plan it in spreads, the two pages a reader sees at once, just as you would for a picture book.
Types of board books
- Concept books: first words, colors, shapes, counting and animal sounds, one idea per page.
- Story board books: very short stories, often built on a bedtime routine or a repeated line.
- Lift-the-flap: flaps hide a surprise on each page, as in Dear Zoo.
- Touch-and-feel: textured patches to stroke, as in the That’s Not My… series.
- Die-cut and shaped: holes or cut edges that are part of the story, like the caterpillar’s holes in The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
- Chunky and padded: extra-thick or foam-padded covers for the youngest babies.
Flaps, textures and cut-outs cost more to produce, and every extra part has to pass the same safety checks as the book itself.
Board book materials and safety
A board book is built to survive a toddler. The pages are printed paperboard mounted on stiff greyboard, sealed with a lamination that wipes clean. Corners are rounded so they don’t poke, and printers use non-toxic inks and adhesives.
Because board books are made for children 3 and under, they also fall under stricter US safety rules than most books. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) exempts “ordinary books” from third-party lead testing, but that exemption excludes books designed for children 3 and younger (as of October 2026). In practice, a board book usually needs:
- Third-party lab testing and a Children’s Product Certificate
- A tracking label with the maker, the date and the print batch
- No small parts that could come loose, such as rings or detachable pieces
Most board book printers can arrange the testing. Ask about it when you request a quote, and check the CPSC’s current guidance for your book. This is general information, not legal advice.
How board books are printed
Board books can’t be printed on demand. Amazon KDP and IngramSpark print paperbacks and hardcovers on paper, not on board stock, so a board book needs an offset print run: you order a set number of copies from a specialist printer, then store and ship them yourself or through a distributor.
| What to expect | Typical figure |
|---|---|
| Minimum order | 500 copies (unit cost drops from about 1,000) |
| Production time | About 4 to 6 weeks after you approve the proof |
| Extra costs | Shipping, storage, safety testing |
That upfront print run is the biggest difference from publishing a picture book. Our guide on how to publish a picture book or board book walks through the full process, and you can see what a board book costs to prepare for print.
When to get help
A board book has very few words, so each one matters. Every page needs one clear idea, a picture that carries it, and a line a parent won’t mind reading for the fiftieth time. Our types of children’s books guide explains how to write one. When your draft is ready, an editor or illustrator who works on board books can help you get it right before you pay for a print run.

Frequently asked questions
What age is a board book for?
Board books are made for babies and toddlers, from birth to about age 3. The thick pages survive chewing and rough handling, and they’re easy for small hands to turn. Many children keep enjoying favorite board books a little longer, but once a child is around 3, picture books on paper become the usual next step.
How many pages is a board book?
Most board books have 12 to 24 printed pages. Each thick board, called a leaf, carries two printed pages, so that’s 6 to 12 leaves. Printers usually offer 6 to 20 leaves, and the page count is always even. Baby board books tend to sit in the middle of that range, with one picture and one line per page.
Can you print a board book on Amazon KDP?
No. Amazon KDP and IngramSpark print paperbacks and hardcovers on paper, not on thick board stock (as of October 2026). Board books need an offset print run from a specialist printer, usually from 500 copies. You can still sell the finished copies on Amazon, but you print, store and ship them yourself or through a distributor.
Do board books need safety testing?
Usually, yes, in the US. The CPSC exempts ordinary books from third-party lead testing, but the exemption excludes books designed for children 3 and under, which includes most board books. Plan for lab testing, a Children’s Product Certificate and a tracking label. Your printer can usually arrange the testing. Check the CPSC’s current guidance for your book.
