Audiobook publishers range from audio-first companies to the audio divisions of the largest book publishers. This page lists 10 verified audiobook publishers, and 4 are open to submissions now. Some read work straight from authors, while the big houses take projects only through literary agents. Every listing is checked against the publisher's own site and shows the route in. Use the picks below to find a fit, then confirm the current guidelines on the publisher's site before you send anything.
How audiobook publishers work
There are two main kinds of audiobook publishing companies on this page. Audio-first companies, such as Podium, put audiobooks at the center of their list. Book publishers with audio lines, such as Sounds True, Harriman House and Saraband, publish your book in print and audio together. Big houses run their own audio divisions: Penguin Random House Audio, Hachette Audio, Macmillan Audio and Simon & Schuster Audio.
Independent audiobook publishers
If you are looking for independent audiobook publishers that read work from authors, start with Podium, which invites authors to send links to their available work and welcomes agents and managers too. It is strongest in science fiction, fantasy and romance. Sounds True, Harriman House and Saraband are independent publishers that take book proposals directly and publish audio editions as part of their lists. Each one has its own subject focus, so match your book first.
The big audio book publishers
The largest audio book publishers are part of the big trade houses. Penguin Random House, Hachette Book Group, Macmillan and Simon & Schuster all run audio divisions, but they read projects mainly through literary agents. Amazon Publishing publishes in print, digital and audio but does not accept unsolicited manuscripts. Penguin Random House Australia opens its portals for writers in Australia and New Zealand at set times. If one of these houses is your goal, an agent is usually the route in.
Choosing among audiobook publishers
Before you approach any audiobook publishers, check who holds your audio rights. If you have already signed with a print publisher, your contract may already cover the audio edition. Then compare each listing’s route, genre focus and status. Every listing here is checked against the publisher’s own site, but terms change, so read the current guidelines before you send work, and be wary of any company that asks you to pay to publish.
Top audiobook publishers and how to compare them
Lists of the top audiobook publishers or the best audiobook publishers often mix publishers, producers and paid services. This page includes only publishers checked against their own sites. When you compare them, look at genre focus, whether they read unagented work and whether they publish print as well as audio. The big audio book publishers suit agented authors, while independent audiobook publishers are the better first stop for most writers.

Which audiobook publishers accept submissions from authors?
Podium invites authors to send links to their available work through its site, and it welcomes agents and managers too. Sounds True, Harriman House and Saraband take book proposals directly and publish audiobooks as part of their lists. The audio divisions of the big houses, such as Penguin Random House Audio, work mainly through literary agents.
Do the big audiobook publishing companies take unagented authors?
Mostly no. Penguin Random House, Hachette Book Group, Macmillan and Simon & Schuster run large audio divisions but read projects mainly through literary agents, with a few imprint exceptions. Amazon Publishing does not accept unsolicited manuscripts. If you want one of these houses, the usual route is to find an agent first.
What does Podium publish?
Podium has three divisions. Podium Audio publishes audiobooks, Podium Publishing releases books in ebook, audiobook and print, and Podium International publishes select authors in international markets. It calls itself a leader in science fiction, fantasy and romance. Authors can reach it through the I'm an Author link on its About page.
Should I pay an audiobook publisher to produce my book?
No traditional publisher on this page asks authors to pay. A traditional audiobook publisher pays you for audio rights or royalties. Services that charge you to record and distribute an audiobook are a different model. Read any offer carefully, and check the publisher's own site, before you sign over your audio rights.
