About NewSouth Publishing

NewSouth Publishing is open to unagented nonfiction proposals. You email a proposal, two sample chapters and your resume through the submissions page. The press contacts you within 12 weeks only if it wants to proceed.

NewSouth Publishing is an imprint of UNSW Press, the University of New South Wales press in Sydney, founded in 1962. NewSouth publishes general, literary and illustrated nonfiction, including books that ask big questions, while the UNSW Press imprint handles peer reviewed scholarly titles. NewSouth also publishes The Best Australian Science Writing each year. The press encourages submissions from First Nations writers, writers of color, LGBTQ+ writers and disabled writers.

Submissions are open and you do not need an agent. You prepare a proposal covering your outline, chapter breakdown, length, audience, comparable titles and any sample illustrations, plus two sample chapters and an author resume. You email it through the Send your completed submission link on the submissions page and receive an automated confirmation. The press contacts you within 12 weeks if it wants to proceed and does not give individual feedback.

Questions about NewSouth Publishing

Does NewSouth Publishing accept unsolicited manuscripts?

Yes. NewSouth Publishing accepts unsolicited nonfiction proposals from writers without an agent. It wants a proposal, two sample chapters and an author resume rather than a full manuscript. It does not consider fiction, poetry, textbooks, children's or young adult fiction or illustrated children's books. PhD theses are only considered if substantially revised for a broader readership.

How do I submit to NewSouth Publishing?

Email your submission through the Send your completed submission link on the UNSW Press submissions page. Include a proposal with your outline, chapter breakdown, proposed length, audience, comparable titles and any sample illustrations, plus two sample chapters and an author resume. Scholarly authors should also suggest potential academic reviewers, because scholarly works are peer reviewed before acceptance.

How long does NewSouth Publishing take to reply?

NewSouth Publishing contacts you within 12 weeks if it wants to proceed with your proposal. You get an automated confirmation when you submit, but the press does not send individual feedback. If 12 weeks pass with no contact, treat the answer as no and feel free to approach other publishers with your proposal.
