KDP Trim Sizes: Every Paperback and Hardcover Size

By AuthorWings editorial team Updated 8 min read

Short answer

Amazon KDP prints paperbacks in 16 standard trim sizes, from 5 x 8 up to 8.5 x 11 inches and A4, and hardcovers in 5 sizes. 6 x 9 is the default. Any size wider than 6.12 inches or taller than 9 inches counts as a large trim, which costs more to print: $4.40 instead of $3.40 for a 200-page black-and-white paperback.

Trim size is your book’s finished page size, and it’s one of several details KDP locks once you publish. This guide lists every size KDP prints in the US store, what each suits, and what it does to your print cost. To set up the book itself, follow our guide to publishing on Amazon step by step, or let our Amazon paperback setup handle it.

Every KDP paperback trim size

KDP’s US store offers 16 paperback sizes, as of October 2026: five regular trims and eleven large ones. Each card below is drawn to scale.

From KDP’s trim size page, US store, October 2026. Groundwood paper, black ink only, sits between white and cream.

KDP also takes custom paperback sizes (paperback only) from 4 to 8.5 inches wide and 6 to 11.69 inches tall. Pick a standard size if you can, because it’s easier to match later on other platforms.

KDP hardcover trim sizes

KDP prints hardcovers in five sizes, each with 75 to 550 pages, in black ink (white or cream paper) or premium color. Standard color and groundwood paper aren’t offered for hardcovers.

Hardcover size (inches)Regular or large
5.5 x 8.5Regular
6 x 9Regular
6.14 x 9.21Large
7 x 10Large
8.25 x 11Large

KDP hardcovers are case laminate: the cover is printed on the board, with no dust jacket or cloth binding. 8.25 x 11 is a hardcover-only size; the nearest paperback is 8.5 x 11, so the two editions won’t match exactly. For picture books, see our guide to hardcover picture books.

Regular vs large trim: how size changes your print cost

KDP counts a trim as large if it’s wider than 6.12 inches or taller than 9 inches. Large trims cost more to print, and above 110 pages the gap grows with page count.

Black-and-white paperbackRegular trim (e.g. 6 x 9)Large trim (e.g. 7 x 10)Difference
100 pages$2.30$2.84$0.54
200 pages$3.40$4.40$1.00
300 pages$4.60$6.10$1.50

Amazon.com print costs, as of October 2026. Up to 110 pages KDP charges a flat fee ($2.30 regular, $2.84 large); from 112 pages it’s $1.00 plus $0.012 a page (regular) or $0.017 a page (large).

The print cost comes out of every sale, so a novel on a large trim earns about a dollar less per copy at 200 pages. A bigger page also holds more words, which can lower the page count and win some of that back. For every Amazon print figure, see Amazon’s print costs by book type.

Which KDP trim size fits your book?

Many authors pick by what readers expect for the genre. These are common choices, not rules.

Before you choose a trim size

    • You can’t change it later. KDP locks the trim size once a paperback or hardcover is published. A new size means publishing a new edition, and under ISBN rules a change of book size needs a new ISBN. A new edition also goes through KDP review again, so allow for KDP review times.
    • Your interior file must match. The PDF page size equals the trim size, or the trim size plus 0.125 inches on the top, bottom and outside edge if images run off the page (bleed). If any page bleeds, the whole interior must be set up with bleed. See bleed vs no bleed on KDP.
    • Page counts are even. KDP rounds up to an even number, with a minimum of 24 pages, or 72 for standard color.
    • The inside margin grows with page count. KDP asks for a minimum inside margin (gutter) of at least 0.375 inches up to 150 pages, rising to 0.875 inches from 701 pages, so long books need a wider inside margin. Our Word page setup calculator gives the exact margin for your page count.
    • Check Expanded Distribution first. If you want KDP to offer the paperback to bookstores and libraries, 8.25 x 6 and 8.25 x 8.25 aren’t eligible on white paper, 8.5 x 8.5 is eligible only in color, cream paper works only at 5 x 8, 5.25 x 8, 5.5 x 8.5 and 6 x 9, and hardcovers aren’t eligible at all.
    • Match your other platforms. IngramSpark offers almost every KDP paperback size as a standard size, but not 8.25 x 6 or 8.25 x 8.25 (they may be possible as custom trims). Our guide to KDP and IngramSpark covers using both.

    When to get help

Choosing the size takes a minute. Setting the interior and cover to it, with the right margins, bleed and spine width, takes longer. Our interior formatting sets your pages to the trim size you choose, and our Online Stores tier ($549) publishes your Amazon paperback in your name.

    KDP trim size questions

What is the most common KDP trim size?

6 x 9 inches is KDP’s default trim size, and KDP calls it the most common trim size for US books. Many fiction authors also choose 5 x 8 or 5.5 x 8.5. All three are regular trims, so they cost less to print than large sizes such as 7 x 10 or 8.5 x 11.

Can I change the trim size after publishing?

No. KDP locks the trim size once a paperback or hardcover is published. To use a different size, you publish a new edition of the book, and ISBN rules give a change of book size its own ISBN. Check the size with a printed proof before you publish, because it’s one of several details KDP locks.

Does IngramSpark offer the same trim sizes?

Mostly. IngramSpark’s file creation guide lists almost every KDP paperback size, including 5 x 8, 5.5 x 8.5, 6 x 9 and 8.5 x 11, but not 8.25 x 6 or 8.25 x 8.25 as standard sizes. Choosing a size both platforms print lets you sell the same edition through each, if you use your own ISBN.

    Is 8.5 x 11 a large trim size?

Yes. KDP counts any trim wider than 6.12 inches or taller than 9 inches as large, so 8.5 x 11 is large and costs more to print. In black ink on white paper it allows 24 to 590 pages, fewer than the 828 most smaller trims allow.
