What a children’s book editor checks that a novel editor doesn’t

A novel editor reads for plot and prose. A childrens book editor also reads for the age of the listener, the page it sits on and the picture next to it.

  1. Word count for the age

A picture book usually runs 400 to 800 words. We cut to the length the category expects, and we tell you which lines carry the story.

  2. Page turns

The reveal belongs on the page after the turn. We mark where each page should end so the surprise lands.

  3. Read-aloud rhythm

Every book up to 12,000 words gets a pass read out loud, because a sentence that looks fine on screen can trip a parent at bedtime.

  4. Vocabulary for the reader

We check word choice and sentence length against the age band, and flag any word a child will stumble on.

  5. Text that repeats the picture

If the art shows a red hat, the text doesn’t need to say it. We cut those lines and turn them into notes for the illustrator.

  6. An ending worth hearing again

Children ask for the same book night after night. We check that the last page earns it.

A picture book edit, before and after

A few invented lines from a sample story, edited the way we edit yours.

Before · 42 words

Bea was a small brown bear who lived in a cave in the big green forest.1 One morning Bea woke up and she was very, very hungry. She looked in her cupboard. It was empty! There was nothing in it at all.2

After · 15 words

One morning, Bea woke up hungry.

She opened her cupboard.

Page turn2

Empty.

Her tummy grumbled. GRUMBLE.3

  1. Cut what the art will show.“Small brown bear” and “big green forest” move into an art note for the illustrator.
  2. Moved the reveal after the page turn.“Empty” now lands on a new page, where a child gets to discover it.
  3. Added a sound to read out loud.“Her tummy grumbled. GRUMBLE.” gives the reader a word to perform and the child a word to join in on.

Rhyme and meter, checked beat by beat

Most rhyming manuscripts fail on rhythm before they fail on rhyme. We mark the stressed beats in every line, so you can hear where the reader will trip.

Before

Olive the owl was never afraid of the darkness at night, so she flew around the forest with all of her might.

Six beats, then five: the lines don’t match, so the reader can’t settle into a rhythm. “With all of her might” is there for the rhyme, not the story.

After

Olive was never scared of night. She swooped and soared by starry light.

Four beats in each line, so it reads like a song, and both rhymes carry meaning.

The meter pass is extra work on every line, which is why a rhyming picture book costs $150 more than a prose one.

Art notes and sketch review from an in-house illustration team

A self-published author has no art director. Our editors work next to our illustration team, so your edit can cover the pictures as well as the words.

  • Spread map and art notes $199

We lay your text across the spreads and write a note for each one, so the illustrator knows what to draw and what the words leave out.

  • Sketch review $149

We check the illustrator’s sketches against the text: nothing repeated, nothing missing, and every page turn set up. Illustrating your own book? Start with our guide for authors who draw their own picture book.

  • Free when AuthorWings illustrates your book

Both are included when our team draws it. See book illustration.

How much does it cost to edit a children’s book?

Editing a children’s book at AuthorWings costs $599 for a picture book up to 1,000 words, $749 for a rhyming picture book, $799 for an early reader and $999 for a chapter book up to 12,000 words. A critique costs $249 to $399. Middle grade is priced per word at our fiction rates, from $0.071 for line, copy and proofreading or $0.104 for all four levels with story notes. Across the market, picture book edits run from about $300 to more than $1,000.

Does a picture book need a developmental edit?

Yes, in a picture book the story and the sentences are too close to edit apart. Our picture book edit covers both in one pass: structure, pacing and page turns, then every line and word. If your text is already revised and only needs a final check, a copy edit costs $240.

What’s the difference between a critique and an edit?

A critique is an editorial letter: what works, what doesn’t and what to change, with no edits in your file. An edit includes the letter plus tracked changes and margin notes on every line. A critique suits an early draft. An edit suits a draft you plan to publish or send to agents. Still drafting? Our guide on how to write a children’s book shows how to plan all 32 pages first.

Do you edit rhyming picture books?

Yes. A rhyming picture book gets everything in the picture book edit, plus a meter pass. We mark the stressed beats in every line, fix lines where the rhythm stumbles, and replace rhymes that bend the story to fit. The rhyming edit costs $749 for up to 1,000 words.

Can you review the illustrations too?

Yes. We write a spread map with art notes for $199 and review the illustrator’s sketches against the text for $149. Both are free when AuthorWings illustrates your book. The review checks that the pictures don’t repeat the words, nothing in the story is missing, and every page turn is set up.

How long does a children’s book edit take?

A picture book edit takes 7 business days, an early reader 10 business days, and a chapter book 10 to 15 business days. Middle grade follows our standard editing timelines, based on word count. A critique usually comes back faster. You get a start date with your quote.

Do you check vocabulary and topics for the age group?

Yes. Every edit checks word choice and sentence length against the age band, from board books to middle grade. We also flag scenes or topics that parents, teachers or librarians may find too much for the age, and suggest how to handle them.

Will the edit help me query agents?

Yes. The edit brings your manuscript to the length, pacing and polish agents expect for its category, and the editorial letter tells you what the book does best, which helps with your pitch. We don’t submit manuscripts to agents for you.

Do I need an editor if I’m self-publishing?

Yes, because no one else will check the book before it prints. A publisher gives a children’s book an editor and an art director. When you self-publish, an edit is how you get both: the text fixed, and notes that tell your illustrator what to draw.

Do you edit nonfiction picture books?

Yes. Nonfiction picture books get the same edit, with extra attention to clear explanations for the age and to back matter such as glossaries and fact pages. We flag facts and figures for you to confirm against your sources. Fact-checking against sources is not part of the edit.

Is there a children’s book editor near me?

You don’t need one nearby. Children’s book editing is remote work: you send the manuscript, and the edit, margin notes and letter come back by email. AuthorWings is registered in Brooklyn, New York, and edits for authors in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and beyond.

What happens after the edit?

Your edited text is ready for illustration, and then for publishing. Our team can draw the book in book illustration, then format and publish it through children’s book publishing. Each step is priced on its own page, and you can stop after any of them. To see the whole route, read how to publish a children’s book.
