Our approach
Text-first or illustration-first children’s book ghostwriting
Children’s book projects start from one of two places, and the work runs in a different order for each. Mixing up the two means paying for art that later has to be redrawn.
Do you already have finished illustrations?
Text-first workflow
- Story
- Text approved
- Characters
- Spreads
You have a story, an outline, a draft, or a clear concept, and the manuscript is written first. Characters are designed from the finished story, so the art serves the words. This keeps you from paying for illustrations while the story is still changing.
- You have an idea, notes, or a draft
- You want the art built around your story
Illustration-first workflow
- Your art
- Page plan
- Words written to fit
- Gaps filled
You arrive with finished illustrations, or a character, visual world, or brand asset the book must honor. The manuscript is written around the art you have, with read-aloud rhythm and words chosen for your reader’s age, fitted to pages and poses already drawn. It takes a little longer per word, so we start with an honest look at which illustrations can carry a story.
- Illustrations are paid for elsewhere
- The writing did not match the art
How it works
How children’s book ghostwriting builds books kids re-read
Seven steps in a fixed order. You approve the plan, the text, and the art before the next step begins, so nothing is redrawn later.
Show the schedule for
You approve before the next step
Typical schedules. Longer books add time, and timelines depend on quick feedback from you on each draft.
-
Free call and brief
We set the age group, format, word count, and whether the book starts a series. You leave with a one-page written brief.
-
Page plan
The story is mapped spread by spread, or chapter by chapter, fixing the page turns and the lines a child can join in on.
-
Writing and read-aloud pass
The manuscript is written to the plan and read aloud in full until every line holds up for your reader’s age.
-
Your review and text approval
You give notes, with 2 rounds of changes in Starter and Growth and 3 in Authority, then approve the final text before any art begins.
-
Character design
Each character gets a sheet of poses and expressions, approved as a sketch before color. See how the character bible is built.
-
Illustration, sketch then color
You review every page as a sketch, where words and picture are checked together, then again in color. This is the longest step.
-
Final check and handoff
You get print-ready and ebook files, all editable files, and full rights, ready for children’s book publishing.
Our craft
How a children’s book ghostwriter writes one spread
In children’s books, the person who buys the book is rarely the person who reads it. A parent chooses it once, and a child decides whether it gets read again. Four crafts decide that second night, and here they are on one spread. For everything parents and children look for, see what makes a good children’s book.
- Read-aloud rhythmEvery line holds up in a tired parent’s voice at bedtime.
- Page-turn pacingEach spread has one job, and every page turn is a small reveal.
- Words for the ageToo hard and the child drifts. Too easy and the parent puts it back.
- Words and pictures togetherThe words say what the picture cannot, and the picture shows what the words leave out.
Tap a craft to see how it shaped this spread.
Read-aloud rhythm
Up, up, up went the kite. /
Higher than the tents. /
Higher than the birds. /
Then… snap!
Every line is drafted out loud, multiple times, before it reaches the manuscript. Sentences are paced for breath, repeated phrases land on a beat a child can predict, and rhyme, when used, is precise and never forced.
“Higher than…” repeats so a child can say it along by the second line. The result is a manuscript that sounds right out loud, the way a parent will actually use it.
Words for the age
- up
- kite
- higher
- birds
- tents
- snap
Every age category has its own vocabulary band, sentence-length expectation, and conceptual ceiling. Our writers check each word, as well as each sentence.
One word that is too hard can lose a young listener. Every word on this spread is one a four-year-old already knows, and the fair itself is left to the picture.
Words and pictures together
Maddie on the left, reaching after the broken string. The dog barks at the sky. Keep the kite in frame, top right, drifting toward the page turn. The text never says where it goes, so the picture has to.
AuthorWings manuscripts are drafted with spread-by-spread art notes that brief the illustrator on what each page should reveal, what should be held back, and what the page turn should build toward. You review and approve these notes before any illustration begins.
The writer owns this coordination. The notes go to an artist from our book illustration services team, who draws from them. Already have a manuscript? Our children’s book editing team writes a spread map and art notes on their own, for $199.
Page-turn pacing
The snap lands at the end of spread 3, so the child has to turn the page to find out where the kite went. Spread 4 answers with the chase.
This was set in the page plan before a sentence was written. Putting the snap and the chase on the same spread would give the answer away before the turn.
Sample spread from Maddie and the Runaway Kite, a picture book made in-house. The text and notes are written for this example.

Who we serve
Six children’s book authors we ghostwrite for
Parents, professionals, faith leaders, educators, and returning self-publishers all come to children’s book ghostwriting with one question they want answered first. Find yours.
“Will it still sound like me reading at bedtime?”
The Parent Author
Often a first-time writer. The story has been a bedtime ritual for years, and you want it to outlive the season your kids age out of it.
How we handle it: the work protects your original telling and adds the read-aloud craft a printed book demands.
“Will a ghostwriter make it feel generic?”
The Educator Author
Teachers, librarians, reading specialists, and homeschool parents writing for a specific grade band or reading level. The book has to work as a story and a teaching tool.
How we handle it: your writer works to the grade you name, and every word is checked against reading-level guidelines for that age.
“Will it read like a lecture in picture-book clothing?”
The Therapist or Counselor Author
Child therapists, school counselors, and clinical psychologists writing about anxiety, grief, divorce, neurodiversity, or trauma. The expertise is real, and so is the audience.
How we handle it: the clinical message is written with read-aloud rhythm and honesty that suits the child’s age, so families and counselors can use it.
“Will the writer treat our tradition with care?”
The Faith-Based Author
Pastors, imams, rabbis, and religious educators writing devotional books, values stories, and tradition-grounded narratives that must honor doctrine, language, and visual sensitivities.
How we handle it: your writer works inside the tradition you describe, with your boundaries on language and images set in writing at the brief stage.
“Will it still hold up at bedtime in thirty years?”
The Legacy Author
Grandparents, family historians, and elders carrying a family story or lesson forward. The audience is often one specific child or one family line.
How we handle it: the manuscript is treated as a permanent record, built to be read aloud across generations.
“Was it the cover, the marketing, or the writing?”
The Returning Self-Publisher
You shipped a children’s book on your own, watched re-reads stall, and could not tell whether the cover, the title, the marketing, or the writing held it back.
How we handle it: the existing manuscript is checked against the four crafts before a sequel is scoped. Story, world, characters, and series rights stay yours.
Children’s book ghostwriting questions parents and authors ask
The questions parents, educators, therapists, and faith leaders bring to the free call, answered.
How much does it cost to hire a children’s book ghostwriter?
Children’s book ghostwriting at AuthorWings costs $3,999 for Starter, $5,999 for Growth, or $11,499 for Authority. Every tier includes the manuscript, full-color illustrations, editing, formatting, rounds of changes, and 100% rights to the text and art. Tiers differ by word count and the number of illustrations, and longer books add words at 20 cents a word. The cover and publishing are separate services. The cost calculator builds your estimate.
How long does it take to write and illustrate a children’s book?
Between 4 and 16 weeks, depending on the tier. Starter picture books take 4 to 6 weeks, Growth books 8 to 10, and Authority novels 12 to 16, with extra time for longer books. Illustration is the longest step, because it starts only after the text is approved and you review each page as a sketch and in color. Quick feedback from you keeps the schedule.
Should I pay for illustrations if I plan to submit to agents?
No. If you plan to query literary agents, submit the manuscript on its own. Traditional publishers usually choose the illustrator themselves, so art you pay for is unlikely to be used. We can write the manuscript alone, quoted on your free call, and our children’s publishing page explains when self-publishing becomes the better route.
Is the illustrator matched to the age category too, or only the writer?
Both. Your writer and illustrator are chosen for the same age group when the project starts, because picture books, chapter books, and novels each need a different drawing style and pace. You see sample work from that age group before you sign, so you know the style you are getting.
What happens if the illustrations and the manuscript do not feel like the same book at the end?
It gets caught at the sketch stage, before any final art. The text is approved first and goes to the illustrator with page-by-page art notes. You review each character and each page as a sketch before color, and fixes at that point fall inside your tier’s rounds of changes. Catching a mismatch at final color costs far more, which is why the order never changes.
How is age-appropriateness actually checked, beyond the writer’s judgment?
Vocabulary and sentence length are checked against reading-level guidelines for your age group. Harder themes such as loss, divorce, illness, or identity are checked against how published books for that age handle them. For school or library use, tell us the grade on your free call, and the manuscript is written to it.
Can you write a rhyming children’s book, or is rhyme a bad idea for self-publishing?
Yes, when the story calls for it. Rhyme done well drives the read-aloud rhythm children predict and chant along to. Done poorly, forced meter and near-rhymes stumble the moment a parent reads aloud. Rhyming lines are metered and drafted out loud so the stress pattern holds at bedtime, and stories that don’t need rhyme often work better as rhythmic prose. The choice is made at the brief stage.
Will the book work in a classroom or library, or is it only for home reading?
It can, if that is the goal from the start. Books for classroom or library use are written for a specific grade, with school-appropriate themes and art suitable for institutional shelves. Books for home reading or specific audiences, such as faith-based or family-legacy titles, follow their own conventions. You choose at the brief stage, because a manuscript written to win both audiences usually wins neither.
How are sensitive topics like grief, divorce, illness, or trauma handled in children’s books?
With age-appropriate language, pacing, and resolution drawn from established titles in the same category, inside boundaries you set in writing at the brief stage. Grief, divorce, anxiety, illness, and family change are handled with care, and trauma is never shown in more detail than the age group allows. Therapist and counselor authors often add a clinical review before the text is approved.
Who owns the characters, the illustrations, and any future series rights?
You own 100% of the manuscript, every character, every illustration, the world, and all series, sequel, and spin-off rights. Editable art files and the Word file come with the print-ready files. If you write book two elsewhere, every character travels with you, and the writer and illustrator keep no claim, royalty, or derivative right. See how we handle full rights to the artwork.
Can my child’s name, likeness, or real-life detail be used in the children’s book?
Yes, with written consent. Legacy books, family-tradition stories, and named-character bedtime books often use a child’s name or likeness. The parent or legal guardian signs the consent, including when the author is someone else, such as a grandparent. Books for commercial release with a real child as a named character need extra rights paperwork, scoped on your free call before any contract is signed.
Can you write a children’s book around illustrations I already commissioned?
Yes. The manuscript is written to fit the art you already have, using the illustration-first workflow. Your illustrations go into the project at the brief stage, and the words are built around the pages and poses already drawn. Because the art is already paid for, these projects are quoted on your free call, as words only or as words plus new illustrations to fill any gaps.
Is the book confidential, and is AI used in any part of the project?
The book stays confidential, and no AI is used. A confidentiality agreement (NDA) is signed before you share specifics, the confidentiality clause survives the project, and everyone on your book is bound by it. We never name children’s book clients without written permission. A human writer writes the manuscript and a human illustrator draws the art, and the no-AI clause is in every agreement before you sign.
Is hiring a children’s book ghostwriter cheating?
No. Children’s publishing has used co-writers and ghostwriters for decades, including on some of the most loved series on the shelf. Hiring a children’s book ghostwriter is buying read-aloud craft the way you would hire any professional. The story, message, characters, and dedication stay yours, and the cover credit is yours alone. If you’d rather write it yourself, our guide on how to write a children’s book takes you through it step by step, and these children’s book ideas can get you started.
I already self-published a children’s book and it launched quietly. Can you rebuild it for a second edition or a sequel?
Yes. On your free call, your existing manuscript is checked against the four crafts (read-aloud rhythm, page-turn pacing, words for the age, and words and pictures together) for its age group. The rebuild keeps your story, world, characters, and series rights, and produces a manuscript built to be read again and again. Existing art either carries forward through the illustration-first workflow or gets redrawn to the new page plan.
